MESSAGE FROM PASS IT ALONG
The Pass It Along Youth Leadership Conference is here: October 3rd at Sussex Tech. If you recall, I discussed at your end of the year Farmstead meeting that we would love to have one counselor from each school directly assisting with our groups during the day. This is a win-win for everyone. Thus, please be willing to offer your help and become an active ingredient on this great day where we Break the Stigma of mental health. Our Service Corps students have been working hard all summer to put this together as this is a day run by students and for our students.
Thank you very much.

Information Regarding Morris County School Counselor Association (MCPCA):
Hi, Sussex!
We had our first MCPCA Executive Board meeting this week and Morris is very interested in continuing our shared relationship with Sussex. The only item I've been asked to pass along to you is that MCPCA's by-laws require MCPCA membership dues used for student scholarships must go to students attending Morris County high schools.
So any Sussex County counselors who would like to join MCPCA, come to Morris County's dinner meetings, participate fully in all MCPCA PD, communication, etc., are invited to join MCPCA by clicking here and we welcome them all!
...and I hope you both have a great year, too!

It is also time for our annual Counselor of the County nominations. Please send me any names of your colleagues you feel are deserving of this prestigious award. Please attach a brief biography and email to me at jkoch@hpregional.org. A committee will be formed to select our 2018 Counselor of the County who will then be honored at a breakfast in May as well as at our end of year luncheon. Please send me all nominations by Wednesday, January 31st.
Also, we are calling all of our creative technical colleagues to step up and assume the role of webmaster of our sussexcountysca website. Chantel Seger has done a superb job of maintaining this site for many years and the site has done a tremendous job of keeping our members updated and promoting our organization. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for Chantel and her beautiful family, she has decided to stay home for the next several years to be with her family! All the best to you Chantel, and we thank you for all that you've done, even maintaining our website throughout your entire maternity leave! Please let us know if you would be able to assume this responsibility.

Dear Counselors,
In coordination with the Center for Prevention, United Way, the county ABS meetings and the School Support Network, we are extending an invitation to the November 7th School Support Network meeting.
This topic of this month's meeting is : The Need for Coping Skills in an Age of Anxiety. Presented by Paul DePinto. Instead of asking a therapist to do another presentation for our organization, we will be joining others at this meeting. And many of our counselors already attend the monthly ABS meetings. Both November and February meetings will provide necessary information to us on anxiety and supporting LGBT students. Instead of a separate meeting for the winter, we would like to join in with the School Support Network to gain this valuable information.
Our next formal SCSCA meeting will be our brunch graciously hosted by Sussex Tech on Tuesday, February 6th. In the meantime, please continue to consult our webpage at sussexcountysca.org for lots of pertinent information. Hoping to see you at the School Support Network!
Please use the link to register. You do not need to email Joanne or I. We hope to see your there.

We hope you all had a very relaxing and enjoyable summer and are having a great start to the 2017-2018 school year! We are so excited to let you know that our kick off breakfast is once again going to be graciously hosted by Berkeley College. We are trying a new venue this year and the Farmstead Golf and Country Club in Lafayette (where we have had our end of year recognition/retirement luncheons) will be serving us breakfast on Tuesday, September 26th, at 8:30 a.m. Please RSVP to jkoch@hpregional.org by September 21st. Hope you can join us for the start of a great year!
We also would like to offer a great big thank you to Becky Carlson and her staff, especially Jenn Boyle, for all the work they have done to bring us an action packed In-Service Day on Monday, October 9th. Also, thanks so much to Todd Poltersdorf at Sussex County Community College for once again graciously offering to host! Please stay tuned for invitations and RSVP information!
Our website maintained by Chantel Seger is such a valuable resource. Please continue to visit us at sussexcountysca.org for a lot of very useful information.
Also, please note that Jill Wolak at Byram knows of a Graduate School Counseling student who is in need of a final internship and would like to be placed in a MS and/or HS in Sussex County. If you are or know of someone who would be interested in an intern, please contact Jill at her contact information. Thank you!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much to so many for a beautiful retirement and recognition luncheon. We are so appreciative of Gretchen and staff at Berkeley College for their continued commitment to our organization and all we do!
Congrats again to Jolene Hegarty, our Counselor of the County. It was wonderful to officially present Jolene with her plaque from the organization and to hear more about Jolene and all the wonderful things she is doing at Kittatinny! Congrats again Jolene!
While we are so very happy for our retirees, we are also so very sad to see John Gill and MaryJo Vroegindewey retire. Both John and MaryJo have not only been excellent counselors and valuable additions to their respective schools, but they have made such contributions to our association as well. John has done an awesome job serving as our treasurer for many years, ordering all plaques, and creating certificates for the High School Caring Awards and our PD hours! John never misses a beat! Speaking of beats, Mary Jo has been a fixture at our Middle School Caring Awards for many years, always doing a fabulous job on our closing activity and enlightening all with her singing! So happy for Mary Jo that she can now spend her time singing to her new grandson! Much much happiness to both of these excellent colleagues on their well deserved retirement! Also, a great big thank you goes to Betty Scymanski who spoke on behalf of Jolene and John, and Kaleigh Ralph for speaking on behalf of Mary Jo. Both Betty and Kaleigh were terrific!! (Great singing Kaleigh!!)
Thanks so much to all of you for your contributions to our college shirt days. Our treasury and membership is in amazing shape and we are so appreciative of the commitment from all. The recipients of our scholarships were delighted and very appreciative! (Thanks Donna and committee!) Please continue to visit our website at sussexcountysca.org for information and photos of all our events. Many opportunities are posted on our website! (Thanks Chantel!)
Becky Carlson from the Center for Prevention is already very busy getting ideas for our Columbus Day in-service at the college. Thanks so much to Becky and Todd for your continued support as well.
Best wishes to all of you and your families for a very happy, safe, and restful summer. September will be here before you know it so enjoy every minute! We hope to see you at our September meeting.
All the Best,
Joanne and Kim

Happy Spring Everyone!
They say April showers bring May flowers. At this rate, we should be seeing lots of flowers in May!!!
A great big thank you to Melissa Bischoff at PSS for hosting our very well attended and informative meeting this week. It was great to hear updates of all the wonderful events PSS is sponsoring and it's always a treat to visit the beautiful Sister to Sister Prom Shop.
Patty Tomaszewski also shared such valuable and needed information with us on the topics of Gender Identity and Transgender Issues, and we are grateful for her knowledge of the subject. Please make sure to visit our website at sussexcountysca.org for Patty's handouts and other helpful information. Thanks, as always to Chantel Seger, our fabulous webmaster for her awesome job on the website!
As part of our business meeting, we did discuss our upcoming programs to include the High School Caring Award ceremony on May 24, 2017 at SCCC. More information will be sent soon from Kim Knabb, HS Program Coordinator. We are also excited about our end of the year Recognition/Retirement Luncheon to be held at The Farmstead on Friday, June 2nd, from 11:30 a.m - 3:00 pm. Stay tuned for detailed information, to be sent soon. Please notify us of any retirements so we can properly honor our retirees for their service.
Our scholarship applications (Donna Picciuto - chairperson) were sent to all schools. Please contact Donna at dpicciuto@vtsd.com with any questions. Finally, May 1st is National Decision Day - so this provides us with a great opportunity to have students wear their chosen schools (elementary and middle schools can wear apparel from mom, dad, or siblings' schools) and teachers wear their Alma Maters with jeans and contribute a monetary donation to our association! "College Apparel Day" can be held any day that week. This is a great fundraiser to raise money for scholarships - everything goes right back to our Sussex County students!!
Thanks again to everyone for your continued support of SCSCA! As mentioned please continue to check our website for any updates and valuable information. Have a very safe and enjoyable spring break with your family and friends.

Hi Everyone,
SCSCA is concluding our final week of school with two wonderful programs. A great big thank you to Todd Poltersdorf from SCCC for once again hosting our High School Caring Awards. It was a beautiful morning and extra thanks to Kim Knabb for chairing the event (and John Gill, our treasurer, for all his help with plaques and his color coordinated efforts!) Thanks also to Mr. Kurt Walton, our inspirational guest speaker.
Also, yesterday we had our wonderful end of the year recognition/retirement luncheon at the Farmstead which was very well attended. Congratulations to Nicole Keane, our Counselor of the County, and Lorraine Bollmann, Ellen Buchney, Suzanne Crisman, and Stefanie Gastaldello on their retirements! We also acknowledged our scholarship recipients who each received $250.00 for a total of $750.00. Thanks to Donna Picciuto and her committee for assisting in this endeavor. Speaking of funding, much appreciation to all our schools who have done college t-shirt days to boost our treasury (which is in great shape) which in turn goes back to our kids!
Thanks to all for an absolutely wonderful year! Our membership is in the best shape it has been in years and it is due to the efforts of my fellow officers and our awesome website maintained diligently by our very own Chantel Seger, as well as all of you! We are continually grateful to support from the community to include Becky Carlson and Tina Aue from the Center for Prevention, Melissa Bischoff from Project Self Sufficiency, Todd Poltersdorf and Julie Fliegel from SCCC, Gretchen Orsini from Berkeley, and John Davies from Universal Technical Institute.
Please continue to monitor our fabulous website at sussexcountysca.org. Best wishes to you and your families for a very safe and enjoyable summer.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much to all of you who attended our April meeting, and what a meeting it was! Our appreciation once again to Melissa Bischoff for her hospitality and presentation about Project Self Sufficiency. The Sister to Sister Prom shop is just amazing and such a wonderful service to the community. Not only does it provide dresses to girls going to the prom, but to any special event that requires them to dress up.
Thanks also to Cynthia O'Connell who had us all leaving feeling relaxed and much calmer! Her fabulous presentation on mindfulness and yoga calm was certainly enjoyed by all. For those of you who couldn't attend, please visit Cynthia's website atmindfulnessconnection.com
Please remember our upcoming dates:
Scholarship deadline is May 1st
College t-shirt/sweatshirt day is Friday, May 6th. Please collect mony to help defray our costs for students scholarships.
High School Caring Awards is Thursday, May 26, 2016
Our final meeting for the year will be our Retirement and Recognition luncheon to be held on June 7th from 12:00 - 3:00 pm at the Farmstead Golf and Country Club (details to follow in a future email). As of now, we have three confirmed retirees and possibly a couple of others. Please plan on joining us to honor them, as well as our County Counselor of the Year, Nicole Keane.

Hi Everyone,
Happy Spring! A great big thank you to Kim Robinson for an absolutely wonderful Middle School Caring Awards Assembly last Thursday. Also, continued appreciation to Todd Poltersdorf and Julie Fliegel, our ever gracious hosts at SCCC for ordering up some beautiful weather and delicious breakfast. The Middle School Awards would not be complete without our very fun closing activity hosted by our very own Mary Jo Vroegindewey. It was such a beautiful morning and everyone left there with such uplifted and happy hearts!!! Thanks again to all for a very inspirational morning!
Please don't forget to RSVP to jkoch@hpregional.org regarding our next meeting on Thursday, April 7, 8:30 a.m., hosted by Project Self Sufficiency. We will have a presentation by Cynthia O'Connell, a Specialist Professor in the Educational Counseling Department at Monmouth University. Cynthia is a certified Yoga Calm Trainer and a Reconnective Healing Foundational Practitioner. She works with children through adults in yoga/mindfulness techniques and Yoga Calm.
In addition, we will hear from Melissa Bischoff about the Sister to Sister Prom Shop, as well as some of Project Self Sufficiency's other programs.
Please continue to check out our website at sussexcountysca.org for updates. Scholarship applications are out as well as information on the High School Caring Awards. Please keep us posted on college sweatshirt days and also notify me of any retirees.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 7th.

Joanne and Kim

Hi Everyone,
It's hard to believe we are talking about our April meeting already! Where has the year gone? We have a very exciting meeting planned for April 7th at 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with a packed agenda. Melissa Bischoff from Project Self Sufficiency will once again be hosting us with a continental breakfast and Melissa will be speaking a little bit about their Sister to Sister Prom Shop. The shop will be set up and PSS would love to show us so we can share with our students in need. Additionally, PSS will provide us with information about Project Sussex Kids County Council for Young Children.
Following PSS's presentation, we will then hear from Ms. Cynthia O'Connell who will share quite a bit of information about mindfulness and yoga with us. Her workshop is fascinating and we have been anxiously awaiting to hear her! Thanks to Ellen Buchney for arranging.
Please continue to consult our website at Sussexcountysca.org for updates. Our wonderful Chantel Seger who is on maternity leave (congrats to Chantel and James on the birth of their beautiful son!) is continuing to maintain the site. Our Middle School (Kim Robinson) and High School (Kim Knabb) Caring Awards, as well as scholarships (Donna Picciuto) are all approaching very quickly! Please remember college t-shirt and sweatshirt days with donations going to our association which in turn go back to our kids via our scholarships. We will also be speaking about our retirement/recognition luncheon in June so please keep me updated on any retirees.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on April 7th. Please RSVP to jkoch@hpregional.org by April 1st (no foolin!)
Fondly,
Joanne and Kim

February 2016
Hi Everyone,
Hope your year is off to a great start! Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 9 from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. at Sussex Tech. We are once again very appreciative to Sussex Tech and Mike Tressler for offering to host us for our annual February meeting. We will start with an overview of Tech at 8:30 am followed by our business meeting. We have much to discuss, as there are activities scheduled for each month until the end of the year! We are hoping that time permits and we will be able to break into our respective groups and discuss pertinent topics. Following this, we will be treated to a delicious brunch courtesy of the Culinary Program at Sussex Tech. Please RSVP to jkoch@hpregional.org by February 1st so Mike can provide numbers to the culinary staff. Looking forward to seeing many of you on February 9th.
Julie Tremont, LCSW will be our guest speaker that day. Julia Tremont works essentially with grades 3 through 8. Julia is certificated and continues to pursue additional training in Mindfulness techniques. Julie has received formal training at a nationally renown Mindfulness Center. Julie is proficient in teaching these strategies to our special ed population. She is on demand with the teachers in our school. Julie will be demonstrating the breathing, focus and attentiveness techniques and skills as part of her sharing.
Please continue to refer to our valuable website at sussexcountysca.org for a wealth of information. We wish our wonderful web master Chantel Seger all the best as she begins her maternity leave soon with their second child. We are very appreciative that Chantel has volunteered to keep the website updated even in her absence. Thanks Chantel and we will miss you! Enjoy!
Lastly, but very important...please think about nominating a colleague for the Counselor of the County award. We have so many wonderful counselors here in Sussex County that are very deserving of this award. Below is a template to assist you in writing your letter. This has been provided by the state executive team. Or if you would like to use something similar, just make a copy to your own google drive first.
