ESA Youth Scholarship Program

I hope all is well. Someone forwarded some information to me regarding scholarships and I wanted to share it with you. I hope this is meaningful. In addition don’t forget about WIOA and the $5000 that is available as well for eligible students. Enjoy the rest of the day and have a good safe weekend.
2018 ESA Youth Scholarship Program is available for high school seniors entering postsecondary education.
To appreciate the contribution that police, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs offer to their communities.
The award amount of the scholarship is $10,000.
The scholarship application deadline is March 23, 2018.

My name is James Bryant we met at one of the NJSCA events. I am the Supervisor of Youth Workforce Programs, from Morris/Sussex/Warren Employment & Training Services (ETS), a partner of NJ Dept. of Labor’s American Job Center (One-Stop Career Center) delivery system. We communicated briefly during the event and I am reconnecting as a gentle reminder of services and funding that we have available. Additionally I would like to meet High School counselors, Drop-Out Prevention Counselors, Child Study Transition Teams specifically for IEP/504 students, McKinney-Vento liaisons, and any DCF served youth to share information regarding our Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding opportunities for at risk students described below, and in the attached documents. My sense of urgency is we realize we have a gap in our ability to reach students, and the more people I speak with, the more I realize people are unaware of this offering, hence my request for your help to share with your teams.

Center for Prevention Resources
Dear School Principals and Vice Principals, Guidance Counselors, SAC’s, Athletic Directors and School Nurses - After presenting at the Superintendents Roundtable, I wanted to share what I sent to each of them. Please email or call Tina or I with questions, concerns and how we can assist you!
Thank you for allowing us time at your Roundtable meeting this morning to share the latest trends and concerns we have regarding youth use of alcohol and other drugs. While experimenting with drugs doesn’t automatically lead to substance use disorders, early use is a risk factor for developing more serious problems with alcohol & other drugs. Risk of drug use also increases during times of transition, such as changing schools, relocating, death of a loved one or divorce (parents). The challenge is distinguishing between the normal ups and downs of adolescence and the red flags of the beginnings of serious drug use that could result in a substance use disorder. Our trained counseling can offer evaluations, referrals, out-patient and intensive outpatient counseling services. Important to note is we hold county funding dollars for youth and can even do parental counseling with the children we serve. Plus we can work with your schools if you need a student to have a urine screen due to 18A. We also have some (a small amount) funding $’s for in-patient services.
Early identification is the key! As I pointed out this morning, when we can work with youth in middle and high school that are drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, we have a much better chance of not allowing their use to progress to prescription medications, synthetic drugs (such as Molly, K2, Kratom, etc.) and heroin. Please consider having us come in to do an in-service for your staff, our fee is very reasonable and we can tailor it to fit your needs and time constraints. Additionally, if you are holding an event (class trip meeting, orientation, sports or extra-curricular activity) meeting with parents, that is a perfect time to engage them as you have a captive audience. Kudos to Newton High School as they recently invited us to their freshmen orientation (for parents and students) and we were able to reach a large amount of parents!

Attached is the evaluative tool being proposed by our organization (NJSCA) to be used instead of the adopted Danielson Model. There is no guarantee that this proposed pilot version will be used, but it seems to be more directly related to our jobs than the Danielson. If you want to post this on the Website next to the Danielson model and ask members to review and provide feedback to me, I will get the comments to the NJSCA Executive Board. (EMEMMELA@krhs.net)
